Every shop in Kannur sells cotton, linen and blends. Very few explain the difference in a way that survives contact with an actual Kerala afternoon.
Cotton
Breathes well, absorbs sweat, cheap to replace. It also creases the moment you sit down and holds damp for a long time in high humidity, which is why a cotton shirt can feel heavier at 4pm than it did at 9am. Best for short days and anything you will wash often.
Linen
The best thing in genuine heat. Loose weave, dries fast, gets softer with every wash. It creases even more than cotton, and there is no fixing that, so wear it where a relaxed look is correct. Not for a formal interview.
Cotton lycra and poly blends
The compromise most people actually want. Holds shape, resists creasing, survives a full day, and takes a machine wash without complaint. It breathes less than pure cotton, so it is worse in still air and better when you are moving.
Washing, briefly
- Turn dark shirts inside out. Kerala sun bleaches shoulders first.
- Cold water for anything with colour. Hot water is what fades a navy shirt in a season.
- Dry in shade. Direct sun is faster and costs you the colour.
- Linen: pull it into shape while damp, skip the iron entirely.
